The world's first standard for scrapping elevator components has been introduced

The National Standards Committee held a media briefing on the 20th and released the national standard "Technical Conditions for Scrapping Main Components of Elevators". This standard was independently developed by China, and there is currently no relevant international standard available internationally. The standard specifies 13 technical conditions for the scrapping of major elevator components that have a significant impact on the safe operation of elevators, including safety protection devices, emergency rescue devices, shaft safety doors and flap doors, drive engines, cars, landing doors and car doors, and electrical control devices. This fills the gap in the lack of elevator scrapping standards in the domestic and international elevator industry for many years.

It is reported that there are currently 3.6 million elevators in use in China, of which over 80000 have been in use for more than 15 years. The safety risks of old elevators have attracted widespread attention. Due to various factors such as design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and use, there are significant differences in the service life of elevator systems, making it difficult to establish a standard for determining the scrap of elevator systems. By scrapping the main components that have the risk of failure or potential failure, the upgrading and renovation of the entire elevator system can be promoted, which is beneficial for improving the operational safety and service life of elevator equipment.

The new standards also take into account public safety and resource conservation. Taking Shanghai as an example, there are currently over 20000 elevators with a service life of more than 15 years. If all elevators are scrapped based on a design life of 15 years, with an average cost of 400000 yuan per unit, it would require an investment of over 8 billion yuan. However, only scrapping and replacing components that do not meet safety performance requirements can continue to maintain safe operation of elevators. By replacing 20% of the components, it can save over 6.4 billion yuan in funds.

The new standard will officially come into effect on February 1st next year, accelerating the renovation and upgrading of in use elevators, especially old ones, to improve their safety performance. At the same time, the National Standards Committee will accelerate the development of the national standard "Technical Conditions for Scrapping Main Components of Escalators and Moving Walkways", improve the national standard system for scrapping elevator products, and continuously enhance the safe operation level of old elevators.
